Cluster solution certification
We are currently working on setting up a 2-Node cluster using SQL Server
2005.
Hardware :
HP Blade servers : BL 460c (c7000 enclosure)
SAN from Compellent Technologies
Fiber channel network.
OS : Windows Server 2003.
My understanding is that this cluster solution (as a whole not individual
components)needs to be certified by Microsoft in order to get support from
them in the future.
I checked the microsoft site www.windowsservercatalog.com but couldn;t find
the entire system as a whole for the above combination. There were other
combinations of SAN from Compellent and Proliant servers from HP.
I spoke to Compellent, and they directed me to the "wondowsservercatalog"
site.
I'm trying to get hold of someone from HP who can help me with this ,so far
no success.
Does anyone of you use the above platform for Clustering without any issues.
If so, for how long?
I appreciate your input.

Blade cluster = Low Availability Cluster, regardless of the certification.
Blades share too many critical components (Power Supplies, inbuilt network
switches, etc.) for me to count them as truly redundant solutions. Some
blade systems are less "interdependent" than others, but when you are trying
for both hardware redundancy (Clustering) AND lower cost through combined
hardware (blade platform), something has to give.

Cluster Setting Failure Stay On Same Node
stay on the same server node?
What is the Cluster setting if the present node has 3 failures (default) to
move to another server node?
Thanks,
Joe K.
If I understand you correctly, this type of behavior is specified in the
Advanced tab of the resource Properties dialog form. There, you can specify
whether the cluster service tries to restart a resource or simply lets the
resource to fail.
If you want the cluster service to restart the resource, then you must
specify whether the resource failure should affect the group that contains
the resource. If you want to failover the group when the resource fails,
check 'Affect the group', and specify the Threshold and Period values. These
values determine how many times the cluster service will restart the resource
before failover and the amount of time in which the threshold number of
restart attempts should take place.

Cluster Failover - Setting Affinity
How do you script-o-matically set processor affinity on SQL after a
cluster failure?
The purpose is that I'll be failing to a machine with a different
amount of CPU's (4 instead of 8). I want to control what SQL
instances take what amounts of processor.
Is this even possible?
Thanks!
Not that this will help any, but Datacenter allows for this from the Process
Control program
Cheers,

|||... then I wonder if you can do it in WSRM in Win2k3 that allows you to set
percentages etc on processors - it seems to be derived from the Process
Control Tool in Datacenter ?

|||Excellent idea Andy! WSRM is not do processors affinity though. It does do
these things:
Set CPU and memory allocation policies on applications. This includes
selecting processes to be managed, and setting resource usage targets or
limits.
Manage CPU utilization (percent CPU in use).
Limit the process working set size (physical resident pages in use).
Manage committed memory (pagefile usage).
Apply policies to users or groups on a Terminal Services application
server.
Apply policies on a date/time schedule.
Generate, store, view, and export resource utilization accounting
records for management, service level agreement (SLA) tracking, and
charge-back purposes.
see
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsserv...fastfacts.mspx
for more on WSRM.
Its a great package and free for EE and DC editions.

ehr, I just checked with the WSRM site and found the following snippet:
It is not recommended that you use WSRM CPU affinity for SQL Server 2000.
That being said, it doesn't appear as though that's going to work.
Any other suggestions?

Client side setting to make Unicode aware
Hi
In oracle there is a client side nls_lang setting to ensure the client is Unicode… how is this done in SQL Server? Please mention this for various clients - SQL Native CLient, OLE DB Driver, SQL Server Management Studio etc.
What should be the setting if just one of my tables has Unicode data and the rest have non-unicode data . What are the implications in terms of both on display and data input for both types of columns?
The only setting that SQL Server 'requires', is that the column be defined to accept UNICODE values -either Nchar(), Nvarchar(), Ntext(), or Nvarchar(max). Then it will accept and store any bit string passed by the client.|||
Ok...say I have a windows form application that has a text box that accepts characters...how do I set it to read
say "Chinese characters" as well as English characters and also ....When I click on a button say "SUBMIT" the data entered in text area get stored as unicode.
Also I have another windows form where if i click on a button I need the display of both Chinse as well as English charcters,
Chince charcaters I am talking here are Double Bytes.
|||That functionality comes from the language/culture settings for the application, and the code pages available to the OS.
You would most likely get the help you need by posting in one of the appropriate .NET Windows Forms forums.
