Cluster SQL 2000 errorlog problem
SQL 2000 Ent Ed and one of the active/active nodes continually gives the
error below in the Application Event log.
The NT user which was used to install the server and owns the directories
and files below has full rights so this should not be an issue.
I've checked MSDN, etc. but nothing which seems to help.
Thanks.

Ron,
Is drive D local to the server or on the cluster's shared drives? The error
message could be implying that the node in question was installed with the
data files on a local drive.
Hope this helps,

SQL Server is installed on the C: drive, the data files are installed on D:
which is a SAN drive share.
I've rebooted both nodes and only started node1...with node2 offline, there
errors are not appearing in the event logs...? Seems odd as it's node1 which
is logging the errors...any other ideas?
Thanks.

Cluster SQL 2000
SQL 2000, each instance is on different node, we noticed that every
instances have configured with TCP port 1433.
Is it possible on Cluster?
Hello.K
Since SQL uses 1433 as the default port and each instance sounds like its
running on its own node, I would say yes?

SQL resource group (virtual server) has its own IP address and network name.
Therefore, you can have each instance on 1433 if you desire. HOWEVER, there
are some gotchas. If you are hoping to connect to VirtualServername rather
than VirtualServerName\InstanceName, it won't work with anything higher than
MDAC 2.6. Even if you put a named instance on 1433, the client library
'knows' it isn't the default instance. MDAC will report an error that you
are connecting to the wrong instance.

Cluster Service remain on starting state after quorum log corrupti
I have a 2 node windows 2000 Cluster with a problem. I think the quorum log
became corrupted and now on both nodes the cluster service cannot start.
Without the cluster service running i cannot access any of the resources. On
the event viewer i have some error messages indicating that the quorum log is
corrupted, is there a way of getting the cluster service to start?
I already tried starting the service with the -noquerylogging parameter, the
service started and i could clear the old log from the quorum disk, but after
that i'm trying to restart the service and he just stays on starting state
indefinetly. Is there anything i can do to save my neck...because i noticed a
few minutes ago that bmy backups were not running properly.
Please help me out, i have to start cluster on the next 8 hours!!!!
Thanks a lot

Have you tried this.
Power off one of the nodes.
On the remaining NODE start cluster service with -noquorumlogging
Delete Everything inside of the MSCS directory on the Quroum drive (I know
you stated you deleted the quolog.log file previously).
Stop the cluster service and then start it with the -resetquorumlog
If this works then stop the cluster service and start it normally. I have
seen quorum logs become so corrupt that resetquorumlog does not work this
usually fixes it. If this does not work I would recommend the following:
Reboot the only node that is powered up with the cluster service set to
manual.
Go to the command promp c:\Windows\Cluster\clussvc -debug >c:\debug.txt
cut and paste the output into the news groups.

Cluster service error
running.
When I try to start the service through Cluster Administrator, which
is
installed on the local machine, I get "Error 1060: The specified
service does
not exist as an installed service"
The cluster service does not appear to be installed.but the same is
installed in other node .
Shouldn't this service be installed along with the OS and if so what
do you
suggest'
Any help on this would be appreciated as I cannot find any info on
this
problem anywhere......Hi,
I'm not quite sure which service you try to start, but the SQL server
services will not be runnning on the passive node of the cluster. when
you move your ressources to that node, the services will be started ( -
and will be stopped on the node that now is the passive ).
The cluster service will be running on both servers though.

Hi Steen
The cluster server is not starting on the node-1. when i try to start
the service it says cluster service does not exist as an installed
service. As I tried to start the service from C:\WINDOWS\Cluster still
it is not starting is there a way to install these service which i am
not able to see on NODE-1 but it is present on NODE-2 which is active
but all drives are offline expect.
1)cluster IP Address
2)Cluster name
3)Disk Q (Quram)
4)MSDDTC
I think if the service starts on NODE-1 the cluster will be up.
Thanks,

Are you sure NODE-1 is setup to be part of the SQL Cluster.
(keep in mind clustering SQL is two steps, creating nodes as a window
cluster and then defining/creating the SQL cluster.
For example, you could have 3 nodes in a windows cluster, A, B, C. A,B
could be setup as a SQL cluster and B,C as an exchange cluster.)
And all services should start on any valid cluster, there is no preferred
cluster.
Hi Steen

I think if the service starts on NODE-1 the cluster will be up.

Cluster Server Rename
What about renaming the underlying physical nodes as well ?
Can this easily be done or does this call for an entire Cluster rebuild ?
Using SQL 2K and Windows 2003
you can rename your cluster :
http://technet2.microsoft.com/WindowsServer/en/library/3423f079-753c-4066-a998-26bf274298f41033.mspx?mfr=true
you can not rename the individual nodes, unless you evict them from the
cluster, rename the nodes, and add them to the cluster

However, you cannot rename SQL 2000 virtual server name.

Cluster Nodes and Windows Domains
All nodes in the cluster must be members of the same
domain and able to access a domain controller and a Domain
Name System (DNS) server, as well as a WINS server. The
nodes should not be configured as domain controllers if
you are going to install SQL Server, as you may encounter
some problems, including the fact that domain controller
functionality (such as Active Directory) is not cluster
aware, so all information will be local. This impacts
things such as a directory enabled program's ability to
publish under the virtual server's computer object, which
does not work in a cluster. A WINS server is still
required for Windows 2000/SQL Server 2000 in a clustered
environment if name resolution of virtual resource is
required.
My question:
After reading the above paragraph. I want to setup two
nodes as peer to peer domain controllers running Windows
2000 Advanced, SQL Server 2000, Active directory service
running on each node, in a cluster environment.
What part of this is not cluster aware?
Why do I need a WINS server if I have DNS?
Why can't my nodes be a domain controller?( I'm using the
company's DNS server)
What does this means? (directory enabled program's ability
to publish under the virtual server's computer object,
which does not work in a cluster.)I would never, ever recommend installing SQL Server on a domain controller.
The security exposure is huge.

HUGE security exposure, consider using a member server for your SQL Server
implementation.

Cluster nodes
I've heard in a presentation that the number of supported nodes in a cluster on 64bit system is going to be limited to 4. Can you confirm that?
What about the number of instances? These are the informations that I have:
25 in a cluster (a drive letter is required per cluster group)
50 in a standalone server with Enterprise Edition
16 on the other Edition
Can you confirm as well?
Thanks for your response.
JeromeSQL Server 2005 Enterprise Edition will support as many nodes as the underlying operating system supports .. which is 8 nodes in current versions of Windows (in the editions that support Server Clustering). So the maximum number of nodes is 8, and that's true for both 32-bit and 64-bit.
In SQL Server 2000 32-bit edition the limit is 4 nodes, but the 64-bit edition supports 8 nodes.
Your instance numbers are correct though your number of 25 on a cluster is likely too high: typically you have the drive letters A:, B:, C: already assigned to local drives, so that leaves 23 letters for the cluster groups, and for a shared quorum cluster one more drive letter (Q:?) will be needed for the quorum drive, so that leaves 22. So 22 clustered instances is a more realistic limit, though with an MNS (Majority Node Set) cluster where the quorum info is kept on the local drive of each node you could get 23 clustered instances.
Thanks,
Don|||The maximum instances I have seen on MS SQL 2005 is 16 instances on 4 nodes.

Cluster manager hangs
the cluster goup manualy from the one node to the other. the problem is i
can't move the sqlgroup manualy to the other node. When i do that the sql
manager hangs and nothing happends till i reboot the node where the cluster
group is active than become the group active on the second node. The cluster
dont log anything in the event viewer or the clusterlog file that i cab use
to find the cause of this problem.
I need some help to solve this problem.
Thanks
From the context, by "cluster manager" and "sql manager", I take that you
meant "Cluster Administrator", and Cluster Administrator still reports the
state of the cluster properly, right? (e.g. you can view whether a group is
online and on which node the group is running, etc) In addition, the SQL
instance itself works fine, right?
I'd try to establish whether this is a Cluster Administrator tool problem or
the cluster/sql problem. Try tto move the SQL group using Cluster
Administrator on one of the nodes itself. Failing that, check to see whether
the cluster service works properly w.r.t. the SQL group. For instance, you
can deny the cluster service account access to the SQL instance, and this
will force the cluster service to bounce the SQL group between the nodes
(because its IsAlive check would fail) and eventually give up. If the cluster
does behave this way, I'd then focus on troubleshooting the Cluster
Adminitrator itself.

|||Hi Linchi,
Yes, i mean the cluster administrator. I have two clustergroups named "SQL
cluster group" running on Server1 and the "cluster group" running on
Server2. When i start the cluster administrator i can manualy move the
cluster group to server1 without problems. Failback is also working fine. But
when i try to move the SQL cluster group to Server2 the cluster administrator
hangs and the only way to get the SQL cluster group running on server2 is
taking server1 offline. the same problem occurs when i try to failback to
server 1.
The SQL cluster group contains the folowing resources:
-Disk R
-SQL IP address
-MSMQ
-SQL network name
-SQL server
-SQL Server agent
-SQL Server Fulltext
Also i did the following test:
When i take the SQL server resource offline i can move the SQL cluster group
between the 2 servers. and when i take the SQL server resource online again a
try the same the cluster administrator hangs.
Note: Server2 acts as 2003 DC and DNS server

cluster installation.
I have cluster with 2 nodes (sql 2000 on win 2003 ) and i want to install
active/passive configuration .
for that configuration for my understanding i need named instanced let say
SQLPROD and my vitual server name
is SQLPROD so the name instance will be SQLPROD\SQLPROD this is all very
clear but i do not know
which ip address to specifiy in installation of the sql server when he ask
for ip for virtual sql server.
SQLPROD has an ip address
The IP addr will be what you assign it. You can't use an existing IP, don't
try using the Cluster's IP addr, the install won't let you. The IP addr you
assign must also be in the public address subnet for the cluster.

Cluster does not restart SQL group after network failure
We have just rebuilt a SQL 7.0/NT cluster with Windows 2003/SQL2000 in an
active/passive configuration using 2 nodes. During the course of testing it
we had a general network failure in which the network was unavailable. The
virtual SQL and Windows IP address resources went down and did not come up
automatically once the network was available again. The nodes are configured
for automatic failback.
I can't imagine that in the 2 1/2 years the original cluster was running
that we never once had the network go down, but I do know that during that
time I never had a outage where I had to manually move the cluster group
(which causes the cluster to re-initialize both resources and brings
everything back to normal).
I'm thinking that maybe I'm missing a dependency somewhere or something's
changed between NT and 2003 that I'm not accounting for. Anyone seen this or
have any tips? Thanks in advance!
-Dan
Nope, that is pretty much expected behavior. The cluster manager will try
and restart the resources on each possible node until the retry count is
exhausted. Unfortunately, until the network resource is restored, no node
has the ability to run the SQL group. With the physical network port
offline, the IP address(es) will not come online. Nothing dependant on them
will come online, including the Network Name and the SQL Server. If the
network comes back before the retry timeout and count is exhausted, the
cluster will bring the system online. Otherwise it stays down.

Thanks for the post! I guess I'll just have to make sure the retry &
timeout are set high.

|||Be careful adjusting those numbers. TOo high can cause just as many
problems as too low. Given the frequency of the network outage and the fact
that something like that will NEVER go unnoticed, I would not change
anything. The cluster failover is designed to reduce the typical 30-45
minute human reponse time for a down server. You shouldn't expect the
clustering software do deal with anything beyond that scope. Adjusting the
parameters to try and expand that coverage will only expose a gap somewhere
else. Just document a cluster check as part of your network failure
recovery procedure and you will be fine.

Cluster / SQL 2005 / SAN storage
with two nodes cluster over Windows ent 2003, ent SQL 2005 and SAN
storage.
1) Would the following hardware be enough: SAN storage, fiber channel
switch, two intel servers, 4 HBA (2 for each servers) ?
2) what is the difference betwen fiber channel switch and fiber
channel routing?
3) what is different between fiber channel and iSCSI?
4) what is the zoning?
5) what is the steps to install the cluster windows server?
6) what is the steps to configure the SQL2005? do I need to install
SQL twice in each node, or I just need to install once in the vitual
server?
7) what is the draft diagram?
8) what is the private network, public network for SAN?
Thanks,
Yve
> 1) Would the following hardware be enough: SAN storage, fiber channel
> switch, two intel servers, 4 HBA (2 for each servers) ?
Best practice would be to have two FC switches to create two fabrics for
redundancy. Also as you mention 2 HBA's per node, you probably want "Multi
path software", contact your storage vendor to get more information.
> 2) what is the difference betwen fiber channel switch and fiber
> channel routing?
Switching is done within a fabric. In VERY large installations, routing
might be needed to "route" between various fabrics, most installations, even
with multiple fabrics, you would find switches only. If you only build a
cluster in a lab, you would not need routing.
> 3) what is different between fiber channel and iSCSI?
iSCSI runs over IP protocol, iSCSI is deemed to be more cost efficient,
however when building a SAN there are many questions on cost, speed,
performance, interoperability and reliability (.. .and so on).
> 4) what is the zoning?
In a Fibre Channel Fabric, Zoning determines which HBA can talk to which
port on the Storage.
(e.g. HBA-1 from Server-2 can communicate to Port-X on Storage-A) this
allows multiple Servers and multiple Storage units to be connected to a
Fabric, without "conflicting" traffic on your SAN)
> 5) what is the steps to install the cluster windows server?
Have a read of this first:
A good collection of cluster related articles can be found here:
> 6) what is the steps to configure the SQL2005? do I need to install

Have a read about this in the online books
> 7) what is the draft diagram?
I leave this to SQL guys to answer
> 8) what is the private network, public network for SAN?
- private network is the IP network between the Cluster Nodes for cluster
(only) communications
- public network is the IP network both nodes are connected to, and which
will be used for users to connect to your clustered SQL databases
- private/public networks have nothing to do with SAN, SAN is the network
(FC or iSCSI) which connects your nodes to the shared storage.
