Cluster Upgrade
We have a cluster (2node, 8Way, 8GB) running windows 2000 Advanced. We would
like to upgrade to windows 2003 Enterprise Edition
Whats the easiest way to accmplish this ? what are the options ? are there
any links ?
The easiest way is to upgrade in place. I don't like that technique, so I
usually recommend a two-step upgrade. First, upgrade each node in place to
Windows 2003. Then uninstall SQL from one node, evict it, rebuild it, add
it back to the cluster, and finally re-install SQL and any hotfixes. Repeat
with the other node. That way, you get an upgraded cluster with newly
rebuilt nodes. You can even change the hardware nodes at this time by using
new ones when you replace the original nodes.

Cluster service error
running.
When I try to start the service through Cluster Administrator, which
is
installed on the local machine, I get "Error 1060: The specified
service does
not exist as an installed service"
The cluster service does not appear to be installed.but the same is
installed in other node .
Shouldn't this service be installed along with the OS and if so what
do you
suggest'
Any help on this would be appreciated as I cannot find any info on
this
problem anywhere......Hi,
I'm not quite sure which service you try to start, but the SQL server
services will not be runnning on the passive node of the cluster. when
you move your ressources to that node, the services will be started ( -
and will be stopped on the node that now is the passive ).
The cluster service will be running on both servers though.

Hi Steen
The cluster server is not starting on the node-1. when i try to start
the service it says cluster service does not exist as an installed
service. As I tried to start the service from C:\WINDOWS\Cluster still
it is not starting is there a way to install these service which i am
not able to see on NODE-1 but it is present on NODE-2 which is active
but all drives are offline expect.
1)cluster IP Address
2)Cluster name
3)Disk Q (Quram)
4)MSDDTC
I think if the service starts on NODE-1 the cluster will be up.
Thanks,

Are you sure NODE-1 is setup to be part of the SQL Cluster.
(keep in mind clustering SQL is two steps, creating nodes as a window
cluster and then defining/creating the SQL cluster.
For example, you could have 3 nodes in a windows cluster, A, B, C. A,B
could be setup as a SQL cluster and B,C as an exchange cluster.)
And all services should start on any valid cluster, there is no preferred
cluster.

CLuster problem
I realized an active/passive Windows Cluster from two IBM xSeries346 with
Windows 2003 Enterprise Edition SP1 (patched..) and I use like a shared disk
an IBM EXP400 (certified..).
When Active server go down, passive server can't do automatically the
failover, the second server can't see shared disks..
any help?
thank's a lot
andrea
I can't tell you specifically what, but I recently heard of an issue where
teh drive letters for the shared droves were not "configured" correctly in
the SAN utilities.
Does the group go to the passive node and just sit there, or does it fail
back to the original active node? If on the Passive node, can you see the
drive in "My Computer"?

Cluster on Same Box (for educational/training purposes)
and setup clustering? I have someone asking me that has only one Server to
do this with and they want to learn about Clustering.
Win2003 <-> Win2003 (SameBox)
OR
Can you run SQL Server on an XP machine and still setup clustering on a
Win2K03 Server and cluster the 2?
XP <--> Win2003 (Two Boxes)
Thanks
Erik
Cluster on XP <--> Win2003 (Two Boxes) -- No, the hardware needs to be
identical.
A better solution would be to run PC emulation software like VMWARE and
create a 2-node virtual cluster on one Windows 2003 computer.

Cluster Install hangs
Windows Server 2003 R2 Enterprise two node cluster. I am installing on the
node which the cluster group is currently on. Cluster group only contains
disk drives. I have an IP set aside for SQL.
Go through the installation, get to the point where you enter the IP
address. I add in the IP in the wizard and it accepts it - it moves it down
to the lower half of the screen. It is at this point I click 'Next' that the
install hangs. It hangs for about an hour. I have rebooted after each
failure. The only thing that is sent to the application log is this:
Hanging application _INS5576._MP, version 5.53.168.0, hang module hungapp,
version 0.0.0.0, hang address 0x00000000.
For more information, see Help and Support Center at
http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/events.asp.
Anybody see this before? Any ideas? Usually this is a straight forward
installation. Thanks in advance for any help.
TX:
Did you uninstall an instance before this happened? I'm having this exact
problem, and while there is a BUG KB Article about it
(http://support.microsoft.com/kb/293788/en-us); this isn't my exact problem.
The install hangs on the DialogShowSdDiskGroups action, but my conditions
don't match the article.
Maybe this will help you. If you have found another answer, please let me
know.

|||Yes, we got the install to complete. We think our issue was this: We had
some disk drives offline within another cluster group. Although these drives
had nothing to do with the installation of SQL, the fact that they were down
we believe caused the SQL installation to hang.

Thanks for the response, it put me down the path of looking at my other

I'm running into issues installing SQL 2005 Enterprise on a Win2003 server. They seem to be related to missing rights. I've done a lot of research and have come up empty. Does anyone know why I'm getting these log entries? Thanks for any help.

cluster
I have couple of questions on clustering as well as on hardware.
1) Is the license for SQL Server 2005 Enterprise edition ( Production) on
active/active and active/passive is same?
2) Is the license for sql server 2005 is socket based or processor based, is
there any differnce between them.
3) Do we have any figures for SQL Server 2005 performance on single socket
as well as dual socket servers ?
4) If we have a active/active cluster on single socket on quad core
processor , what will be the license as well as performance when compared to
the active/active on dual socket on quad processor?
Any input is appreciated?

Sort of. There is a single-instance or N+1 exception to normal licensing
requirements. If you have a node that is always a standby system, Then it
doesn't have to be licensed for SQL. Two nodes, one instance, one license.
Four nodes, three instances, three licenses.
Also, on two-node clusters, you might look into Standard Edition for
clustering. It's lots cheaper and it does support two-node clusters.

Socket-based. This makes dual and quad core systems very price competitive
from a licensing standpoint.

> as well as dual socket servers ?
I generally don't trust benchmarks all that much. With SQL, the nature of
the load can vary so much between systems that finding a matching benchmark
is difficult if not impossible. Dual and quad socket systems are commodity
priced so I wouldn't go with a single-socket system except for the very
lowest application. Certainly not for a cluster.

Assuming per-socket licensing, you would need one socket license for the
first and four licenses for the second. CAL licensing (assuming the usage
meets the requirements) would be one server license and N CALS for the first
or two server licenses and N CALs for the second. N being the number of
client users or devices.

Clogged Database?
I am having a really strange situation in my database, where a table
seems "clogged" until I manually insert a row to that table using
Enterprise Manager.
I have MSMQ set up so that it receives transactions pending for
insertion. When someone complains that is not seeing data in the apps, i
see that the MSMQ is loaded with data. As part of the troubleshooting, i
start testing connnections and test queries to diagnose the problem.
However, as soon as I insert a row to the problematic table, the MSMQ
empties agaig
Can you please give me some light regarding this problem'
Thanks, and Happy Thanksgiving.

Until then The database starts timing outHave you looked to see if someone is blocking the table? It's possable you
began a transaction with EM some how and didn't commit it. I have seen
similiar issues when people use EM to view the rows and if you touch any of
the data it can put a lock that you are not aware of.

happens when no one is connected to the database (usually very early in

Next time it happens, before you do your "fix" check for blocking.

Cllient Unable to establish connection
Others are also not able establish connection - they get a General Network error when trying to connecting to my server.
Think the Blue screen death corrupted some SQL driver in the process. Now am apprehensive about uninstalling and re-installing the SQL server since am unable to backup the databases.
Can anybody help please?SQL 2k?
I find it very unlikely...did you bounce the box?
Did and admin revoke your rights?
Blue screen of death? Haven;'t seen that in a loong while.
What o/s and what patches?|||SQL 2K with SP 3. Running on Win 2k (SP4) Server. There has been no change in the admin rights. it just stopped working after the crash.
that's why its confusing.. not much help from Miscrosoft either.

Thx, (also to Tracy).
I tried it but I haven't found a DTS import/export in it.
I would like to import an access file to sql server 2005.
Is it yet possible ?

Client Render broken after upgrade to Win2K3 Enterprise from Standard
First off, any suggestions are welcome here as we're lost.
We have a farm of 2 Win2k3 (standard) servers that had a couple GB of RAM. We then installed 16GB of RAM and upgraded to Win2k3 Enterprise to handle the upgrade.
Prior to the OS upgrade our reports rendered as expected. Post upgrade, they do not.
Some background on how we render...we open a PDF rendering of a report in a popup via JavaScript.
Also, we have 3 environments running the same code base. The only difference between the 3 is that one environment is the one we upgraded to Win2k3 Enterprise.
Again, any suggestions are much appreciated!
Scott
It would probably be important to note that we're using SQL Server 2005 and SQL RS 2005.|||Of course, I forgot to add what's probably the biggest key. Only clients have this problem. Let me break that down. We have servers behing a crazy amount of firewall protection. The DB server is NOT on the SQL RS server. The Web server is also a farm, only serving this application.
I think this is the key. I can call the popup report (via the Web app) on any Web server on the farm, and it renders. When I call the report from a client outside of the network, the popup opens and the little green graphic comes up with "Report is being generated". This happens for about 20 seconds, then the graphic and text go away, the status bar says "Done", and there is a solid line at the top of the page...but of course no report (the title of the popup is correct by the way).
Thanks for your time!
